The Four Breaker Types in a Residential Panel

The mix of breakers in a panel tells our electricians how much of the wiring has been updated.

Four types cover nearly every residential circuit:

• Single-pole standard – One slot, 120 volts, protecting lighting and general receptacle circuits at 15 or 20 amps.
• Double-pole standard – Two slots, 240 volts, feeding a dryer, range, water heater, or air conditioning condenser at 30 amps and up.
• GFCI – Trips on ground fault, meaning current leaking off the circuit through water or a person, and protects bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor receptacles.
• AFCI – Trips on arcing, the sputtering discharge from a loose terminal or damaged insulation, a leading ignition source in aging wiring.

Dual-function breakers combine arc-fault and ground-fault protection in one slot, and we install them where a panel has no room for two. Which type belongs in a slot depends on the circuit.

Does a 15-Amp or 20-Amp Breaker Matter?

It matters, and it isn't a preference. The breaker protects the wire, so the wire sets the ceiling. Under NEC 240.4(D), 14-gauge copper is capped at 15 amps and 12-gauge copper at 20 amps.

If someone swaps in a 20-amp breaker to stop nuisance tripping on 14-gauge wire, the circuit runs hotter than its insulation is rated for before the handle ever moves. That's the first thing we check when a homeowner says a breaker was replaced and the tripping stopped.

How to Reset a Breaker, and When to Stop Resetting It

Resetting takes a full swing, and this is where most attempts fail. Move the handle all the way to OFF, then back to ON. A tripped handle rests between the two, and pushing it toward ON from there doesn't re-engage the mechanism.

Before you reset, switch off whatever was running on the circuit. If the breaker holds, add the loads back one at a time until it trips again. You've found the draw.

Stop resetting and call us immediately if the breaker trips again within seconds, the handle feels loose, or the panel smells hot. A breaker that won't hold is reporting a fault that persists.

Buying a Breaker That Fits the Panel You Have

Breakers aren't universal. Every panel is listed to accept specific breakers by manufacturer and series, so a device that snaps onto the bus can still be the wrong part for that enclosure. A device off a big-box shelf may fit the slot and void the panel's listing.

Two names come up often in older homes across the metro: Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco. Independent testing has documented Stab-Lok breakers failing to trip under overload conditions, and Zinsco bus connections overheating until the breaker fuses in place. We don't patch either panel one breaker at a time. The correction is a panel or fuse box replacement.

What Is the Difference Between a Tripped Breaker and a Failed One?

A tripped breaker moves to the center position. A failed one won't hold or stays in ON while the circuit has no power. We test under load because a breaker can read fine at rest and drop out once current climbs.

How Long Does a Circuit Breaker Last?

Breakers are built to work for decades, though heat, corrosion, and repeated tripping wear the mechanism. We judge one by how it performs under test, not by the age of the panel.

Why Does the Same Breaker Trip Every Summer?

Air conditioning adds a large, continuous draw on top of what the circuit already carries, and a compressor pulls its heaviest current at startup. If a breaker trips only in hot weather, the circuit is loaded near its limit and needs to be measured.

Can I Add a Breaker to a Full Panel?

Sometimes. Tandem breakers fit two circuits into one slot, but only in panels listed for them and in the slots the label marks. If the bus is at capacity, a sub-panel or a service upgrade is the honest answer, and we'll say which before quoting.
