Knob & Tube Wiring in St. Louis

Knob & Tube Wiring Replacement in St. Charles & St. Louis Counties

St. Louis has some of the Midwest's most beautiful older housing stock. The brick row houses of Soulard, the craftsman bungalows of Maplewood, and the historic homes lining the streets of Webster Groves and Kirkwood are houses built to last, and many of them have.

What hasn't aged as gracefully are the electrical systems installed when they were constructed. Knob and tube wiring, the standard method used in American homes from roughly the 1880s through the 1940s, was designed for a world that used a fraction of the electricity a modern household demands. If your St. Louis home was built before 1950 and has never had a complete electrical update, there is a good chance some or all of that original wiring is still in the walls.

Potts Electric works with homeowners throughout the St. Louis metro to assess, repair, and replace knob and tube wiring. Our licensed team can provide you with an honest evaluation of what you have, the risks, and your options before any work begins.

Knob & Tube Wiring in St. Louis Homes

The concentration of knob and tube wiring in the St. Louis area follows the city's development history closely. Older neighborhoods in St. Louis City and the inner-ring suburbs of St. Louis County are where this wiring is most consistently found. Communities like Affton, Overland, and University City, along with older pockets of St. Charles and Pacific in Franklin County, all have housing stock from this era.

In many cases, knob and tube wiring has been partially updated over the years. For example, a former owner of a home may have rewired the kitchen and bathrooms while leaving the bedrooms and attic runs untouched. This partial work can complicate things, because mixed systems sometimes create grounding and compatibility issues that need to be sorted out as part of the remediation process. A thorough inspection documents exactly what's present before any plan is developed.

The Risks of Knob & Tube Wiring

Knob and tube wiring gets its name from the ceramic knobs used to anchor wire runs and the ceramic tubes threaded through joists to protect the wire where it passes through wood. The system was functional for its time, but it has three fundamental problems by today's standards.

  • First, it has no ground wire. Modern electrical systems use a ground conductor to redirect fault current away from people and devices safely. Knob and tube has two conductors (hot and neutral) and nothing else. This means that any outlet or device on a knob and tube circuit cannot be properly grounded, which limits the protection available and rules out the use of GFCI outlets on those circuits without additional work.
  • Second, the insulation on knob and tube wire was typically made from rubber and cloth, both of which become brittle and crack with age. A wire installed a century ago and never touched may look intact from a distance, but the insulation condition up close often tells a different story. Damaged insulation in a wall cavity or attic is a serious fire risk.
  • Third, knob and tube wiring depends on free air circulation to dissipate heat. Decades of attic insulation additions, a common energy upgrade in older St. Louis homes, can bury knob and tube runs and prevent that heat from escaping, creating another pathway to overheating and fire.

Our Knob & Tube Wiring Services

Potts Electric assesses and remediates knob and tube wiring for homeowners throughout the metro, starting with a thorough inspection that documents exactly what is present before any recommendation is made. Because knob and tube systems are frequently mixed with wiring added in later decades, getting an accurate picture of the whole system is the essential first step.

The remediation path depends on what the inspection reveals. In some cases, targeted work on specific circuits is the practical solution. In others, the condition of the wiring or the homeowner's plans for the property make a more complete rewire the smarter long-term investment. We can walk you through both options with clear, honest information about what each involves and what it costs.

Insurance is a practical consideration worth raising early. Some homeowners' insurers in Missouri are reluctant to write or renew policies on homes with active knob and tube wiring, and others require remediation as a condition of coverage. If you are buying or selling an older St. Louis-area home, knowing your options before the transaction begins puts you in a much stronger position.

Common Questions about Knob & Tube Wiring in St. Louis

Can Knob and Tube Wiring Be Repaired Rather Than Replaced?

In some cases, targeted repairs to damaged sections are appropriate. In others, the condition of the wiring or the scope of the home's electrical needs makes complete replacement the more practical path. Our team will give you a clear-eyed assessment of which situation applies to your home.

How Disruptive Is Knob and Tube Replacement?

It depends on the scope of the work and the home's construction. Accessing wiring in older plaster wall construction is more involved than working in a house with drywall. Our team takes care to minimize our work's footprint and cleans up thoroughly after every job.

Does Replacing Knob and Tube Wiring Require a Permit in St. Louis?

Yes. Rewiring work requires permits and inspections in virtually all St. Louis-area municipalities, with requirements varying by St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and surrounding jurisdictions in St. Charles and Franklin Counties. Potts Electric manages the permitting process as part of every project.

Super happy with the job they did.
“I'm sure everyone at Potts is great. However, if you can hold out and snag Courtney Perkins and Adam Barnes, you will not be disappointed. I had them out for a big job, and they absolutely killed it. Everything is so very clean, and they were very easy to work with. Super happy with the job they did. Would absolutely have them out again if need be.”
